Yesterday, Here & There

Wednesday was a gray day with off-and-on sprinkles, but work sped along at St. Bernard's and the concrete truck arrived at around 4:30.

Down near Forge Hollow, huge machines continue to crawl around in Big Creek moving rocks and logs. Because the eight or ten Civil Engineers who are on the job there all seem to be so friendly and appear to be having such a good time, I think that they are really grown-up "little kids" who are living out their favorite childhood pastime and are still happily "playing in a brook!"

Around the village

At the Snows' on Osborn Avenue .......

......... and at the top of the hill on Buell Avenue.

Out in the Country

On Camp Road, west of Sangerfield and right across from Birdland.

Poplars, close relatives of the Quaking Aspens of western mountain ranges, are turning gold ...

........... and when the sun shines on the Oak trees in front of Mrs. Staring's home on White Street, the leaves are as bright as those on any Maple.

Library Director Jeff Reynolds sent me these grand sunny-day photographs of Milkweed
that were taken by his sister, Jennifer Brickley.

FOR THE RECORD

In urging people to attend the Public Meeting at the Municipal Hall this evening, Patty Louise - the Editor and Publisher of The Waterville Times - wrote on the newspaper's Facebook page:

"Anyone interested in the future development of the downtown of the village is invited to come and share ideas and hear the discussion. Guests of the Planning Board will be members of the Waterville First group, which would welcome new members to join and help build up the village's downtown once again."

I've lived in Waterville since 1968 and since 1970 have either participated in or have watched countless "community improvement" committees and "Merchants' Associations" come and go.

I rarely use this blog as a "soapbox," but after all this time it's become easy to see why so many have fizzled or failed, so I'm taking the liberty of proffering my opinion based on what is sometimes called "empirical knowledge:"

In the past, many groups have tried to change a situation or condition without figuring out what caused it to begin with.

1. That doesn't work any better than trying to cure a recurring physical ailment by merely treating the symptom!

2. It is sometimes, but not always, someone else's fault,

3. Nor is it always someone else's responsibility to pay for a cure.

Have a good weekend, everyone!
