Windy!

******

I don't know how far the outage extended, but for a while last evening many residents of Buell Avenue / Route 315 were without electricity.  I'm told that the cause was a motor vehicle collision with a telephone pole and subsequent repair to power lines by NYSEG.

Garbage Day
66 degrees, suddenly growing windy,  but dry at 7:00 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Southern Oneida County from 5:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. today.

The YNN Weather Forecast:
"Showers/Storms Today, Rest Of The Week Looking Nice

This morning will be dry, but look for showers and storms to spread in by the late morning. Heavy rain will be possible for a time early afternoon as the front makes its way through the region.
Rain will taper from west to east Monday evening. We’ll likely start off with some clouds Tuesday morning, but look for skies to brighten by the afternoon. Temperatures will be cooler than what we saw this weekend, but seasonable for early October standards.
High pressure will move in Tuesday night, and set up shop for the remainder of the week making for tranquil weather."

Painters made good use of last week's nice weather and finished the make-over on this West Bacon Street home.

Just yesterday I noticed that there were two painters at work high on a lift at the third floor level of the Swanberg Home, built around 1875 by George Putnam.

This woodwork is some of the most intricate seen on any of the Victorian houses in Waterville.

Although Autumn decorations on homes may remain intact, if today's weather forecast is correct we may see much of our beautiful foliage flying away.

At Bonnie Bechy and her daughter Joanna's home on Babbott Avenue.

Roger and Terry Tanner's front doorway in "Pleasant Valley."

In front of the Harding residence and Harding Nursing Home on Tower Street.

Except for a hundred or so Canada Geese lined up along the northern shore, Chittening Pond was deserted yesterday afternoon.

One of the prettiest sights - starting up Craigfoot Hill.

An ancient maple tree on Fuess-Cleary Road plays host to Woodbine and Lichen.

The Winged Euonymus at Bob and Joanne Treen's on Route 315 leaves no doubt as to why this shrub is sometimes called "Burning Bush!"

The "Pumpkin King" wins again, sets new record!

On Saturday Brian Staring won First Place at the Oswego Giant Pumpkin Festival with the Largest Squash, weighing 874.5 pounds!
He had also won a First two weeks ago in Cooperstown and wrote: "I never dreamed of winning First Place twice for a squash, back-to-back at two different weigh-offs!"

Here's the plaque that he received for growing
"the biggest squash ever grown in New York State!"

I was curious and a little confused about whether this giant veggie was a pumpkin or a squash or were they one and the same. Brian answered:

These are a what you could call a super variety of squash. To the world of Giant Pumpkin growers who grow Atlantic Giant Pumpkins that can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds, these squash are different than them. So to make it easier to many, guys like myself who love this sport, grow giant pumpkins and giant squashes. These giant squashes are a lot harder to grow than the giant pumpkins. The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth has weigh-offs all over the world. They are in Sept. to the end of October. All kinds of rules have to be followed and judges rule." And he sent this link: http://greatpumpkincommonwealth.com/

Thanks loads, Brian, and Congratulations -  again!

Here is a nice letter that I received from Dale Meszler of 260 Structural Engineering that followed my blog posts in which I remarked that "something is happening!" at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.  He wrote:

"Yes something is happening!!

"The stone stairs leading to the three front entry doors of the church and much of the surrounding concrete and masonry have endured for many years and are now deteriorated. The excavation that began earlier last week is the start of the construction of a new handicap accessible entry to the church. A new platform will be constructed at the existing church floor elevation that will extend out toward Stafford Avenue approximately 15 feet. The new concrete platform will have a single center stairway and a ramp to the north allowing all parishioner and guests easy and safe access to all three entry doors. This project is another in several that have been completed at the church over the last few years with money that was raised during our recent capital campaign.  I have included a drawing of the plan and front elevation of this project for use on the blog."   (Please click the image to enlarge.)

(Thank you, Dale!)

I also received a nice note from Gretchen Maine who, somehow, always seems to find time to read the blog!  She added a link to another blogspot blog: "A day in the life of a farmer's wife."
I read the entire post and hope that many of you, whether you live on a farm or have never driven a tractor or milked a cow, will, too!

(Thanks, Gretchen!)

There was an "Oktoberfest" celebration in Syracuse over the weekend, and one in Alexandria Bay, and probably many others throughout New York State and across the country, but Glen and Christine Carroll attended "the real thing" -  the 180th annual autumn beer festival in Munich, Bavaria.

(It looks to me as if Christine is wearing a traditional dirndle and I hope that at least one of them is holding a traditional stein of local beer!)

The Waterville Central School Drama Club, under the direction of Karen Cronkhite, is proud to present its 2013 production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.  Miller’s ageless tale of fear, greed and power debuted on Broadway in 1953 and received the Tony Award for Best Play that year.  Set in the 1600s during the infamous witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts, The Crucible depicts a colony of righteous Puritans. When teenage girls are discovered trying to conjure spirits, the town explodes with accusations of witchcraft.  The vicious trials that follow expose a community paralyzed by terror, and looking for someone to blame.  In the midst of the witch hunt, one man’s soul must submit to relentless examination, where his character will either be forged or destroyed.
