Garbage Day
It's 37 degrees and dry at 6:00 a.m.

The WKTV Weather Forecast: "A secondary cold front arrives today from the north. Areas to the north of Utica see a few showers during the late morning, with the front moving into the Mohawk Valley by the early afternoon.  Decreasing clouds this afternoon, with a noontime high in the mid to upper 40s.  Breezy, with a west wind between 10-20mph.
The coldest night of the season so far is expected tonight.  Clear skies and light winds will help temperatures drop into the low 20s and teens in the coldest spots!
Sunshine in abundance tomorrow.  Still chilly, with highs in the mid 40s.  Warmer, unsettled weather will arrive for the middle of the week.  Halloween looks wet and warmer, with highs in the low 50s."

Here and There

Progress at St. Bernard's!

Next to the front steps of SouthGate Ministries, the "last roses of Summer" are blooming.

Nasturtiums on the fence at Pat's garden on "Maiden Lane."

Another Gingko Tree?  I think so. It's on the East lawn of the former Beha residence on the corner of Route 20 and Newberry Road.

Out in the countryside fields of Soy are dull-looking.........

.......... but in the Village there are more decorations.  These are at a home on Babbott Avenue ....

.............. and these are at the Nasypanys' on White Street.

"............ and those who raked Bill O'Dowd's on West Bacon Street and Stafford Avenue."

Of Interest to Historians

From Gordon Taylor, author of "Fever & Thirst" - the story of Asahel Grant - who wrote from his home in Salem, Oregon:

"I'm writing to tell you about a contact I made yesterday.  A woman who lives near Kalamazoo, Michigan, wrote that her
husband had gone to an estate sale in the country Saturday afternoon.  (In the tiny town of Scotts, Michigan.)  On the back porch of the house, thrown in with a bunch of junk, he found an old oil portrait of a man identified as Dr. Asahel Grant.  A typed index card taped to the back correctly stated Grant's places of birth and death, and the names of his two wives.  From the photograph, it appears to be of the correct vintage.  I think she has found a genuine portrait of Asahel Grant.  He looks different from the daguerreotype, but that's of no importance.  Grant was ill and emaciated when he sat for the daguerreotype, and  daguerreotypes, which required to subject to sit absolutely rigid for two minutes or more, made its subjects look like zombies.  Evidently the lady of the house, who died in 2005, was related to Asahel, but we haven't yet figured out the connection."

The newly-discovered portrait.

This may be the earlier portrait to which Gordon refers.

Thank you, Gordon!
