It's Recyclables Collection day
36.5 degrees and dry at 6:45 a.m.

The WKTV Weather Forecast:  "Rain and snow showers come to an end this morning as a weak system passes through the area.  Watch out for a few slick spots, especially along higher elevations.  Temperatures will rebound into the mid to upper 40s this afternoon under mostly cloudy skies.
Another system brings rain and warmer weather just in time for Halloween.  Highs will climb into the 50s and stay in the 50s during the evening.
Warm Friday, with morning rain showers.  Highs in the 60s.
Cooler, unsettled weather returns for the weekend.  Don't forget, the clocks fall one hour back this weekend."

FEEDBACK

Terry Tanner wrote: "I think that Shoemaker’s Corner is now Sawmill Road --  Dad - Howard Richmond's -  best friend, Stub Shoemaker, lived in that house years ago on the corner of Sawmill next to us … And since it went from Cherry Valley Turnpike (Route 20) to the Oriskany Falls -Waterville Road that makes sense."

From Gretchen Maine: "I think Bascom Corners has to be at the end of Loomis Rd and Rt 12.
I'm taking a wild guess that Winchester might be the dirt road by Mary Mason's (on Newberry Road.) I think the Cherry Valley Turnpike used to go through the woods up in back of there. I do know that the original house here was a stagecoach stop for the Cherry Valley Turnpike."

Jack Youngs offered: "A little help on the roads.
Shoemaker  farm -  Corner of Rt. 20  and Pleasant Valley  road.  At one time my Great Aunt's farm.
Potash Bridge,     Foot of Craigfoot Rd.  And Rt. 12S. I think the creek was called Potash because it started at the Clay Pits on Rt. 20.
Five Corners     Top of Craighfoot Rd.

- and he added:  "Sure enjoy reading the Blog.  Miss the Old Timers meeting."

My thanks, to all of you!

FOR THE RECORD

"Elvira" is back!

For many, many years the Brown family in "Whiskey Hollow" and "Elvira's" family, of the same location, have had an unusual but amicable relationship: for a couple of weeks each Spring and Fall, "Elvira" makes her appearance each evening at dusk to prowl the property looking for grubby treats along the edges of the sidewalks.

A equable arrangement was decided on a long time ago and we've never had a disagreement.  For those brief periods of time, if we allow "Elvira" and kinfolk to roam the entire property for a few hours late each day, they allow us to use it all the rest of the time.

It is, after all, part of country life and is just a minor inconvenience.

HOWEVER....

this year, for the first time in many, I am not going to have my porch lights on Hallowe'en night, and am firmly suggesting that NO Trick-or-Treaters or anyone else try to visit.

"Elvira" just might not understand!

Enjoy the day, everyone!

P.S.   Big Baseball Game this evening may result in a late blog post tomorrow morning!
