These showings take the same time slot as previous used by "The Old Timers' Story Swaps" and - not coincidentally - will appeal to the same age group!

Waterville Book Discussion Group
will meet on Wednesday, Oct 23rd
at 12 noon, in the meeting room at the Waterville Public Library.
Bring your lunch;  coffee, tea, dessert and lively discussions are offered.
This month's book is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Sacks," by Rebecca Skloot.

You may reserve a copy by calling the Library at 841 4651.

"Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years.
The story of the Lacks family is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of."

It's Garbage Day
43 degrees at 5:00 a.m.

The YNN Weather Forecast:

"Nice and Quiet, Beautiful Into the Weekend
Over the next several days, no major storm systems are expected to have an impact on us and high pressure will continue to dominate. This will allow for dry weather and plenty of sun through the rest of the week and into the weekend. The only changes forecast to take place will be the temperatures as a gradual warming trend takes place.
We’ll see highs closer to 70 degrees both Thursday and Friday with temperatures warming into the low/mid 70s Saturday and Sunday.
At this point, it appears our next chance for a few scattered showers will be Sunday night into Monday morning as cold front moves through."

As seen from Gridley-Paige Road, nearly across from McAdam Road, this enormous structure is worth taking a ride to see.

It looks as if it might be fully as large as this barn - built by Ruben Tower in the 1860s and now on Pumilia property next to Huntington Place - nearly hidden by young trees in the Black Walnut plantation.

Wherever you go, you'll see clumps of Wild Sunflowers......

...... and in open fields, like this one between Madison Street and Bogan Road South, large gaggles of Canada Geese taking  sunny-day rests from their southbound travels.

"Today we expect to see sun mixed with a few clouds and despite the frosty start, temperatures will make a pretty decent recovery into the low 60s.
Over the next several days, no major storm systems look to impact us and high pressure will dominate through the end of the work week and into the upcoming weekend. During this time period we’ll see plenty of sun accompanied by a gradual warming trend.

Yesterday - the first day of Fall

First stop:  checked on Bittersweet near the corner of College Hill Road and Skyline drive.  It'll be a while, yet.

Then west on Route 5 to see if the old Hinman Farm produce stand was open - sadly, it was not......

........... so I took a few side roads to North Star Orchards on Route 233.  I had been looking for a big bag of my old favorites - "Spy Gold" apples. They didn't have that variety, but now I have a new favorite" Honey Crisp"!

(Huge, compared to Macs or Cortland - and awkwardly juicy!)

Back over the hills, stopping at the Landis Farm on Shanley Road.

Then back to Waterville and west on Route 20 to do some shopping at The Kountry Kupboard which is right next to Earley's, where this display of pumpkins and mums was too pretty to ignore.

*************

I had been keeping my eye out for wild mushrooms/puffballs and scarlet Woodbine.  No mushrooms, but I found this pretty bit of vine climbing a small length of stockade fencing next to Ken Paulson's Garage on Conger Avenue right here in Waterville.

Even with the sun, expect unseasonably cool temperatures with highs near 60 degrees. Sunshine continues for the week with temperatures moderating back into the 70s."

Here & There - Glimpses of "Cruisin."

Early Saturday. Many, many cars and pedestrians on Main Street, so I went to the Library and took the "scenic route" to Firemen's Field. Dozens were gathered at the ball field ........

.............. and there was a small crowd of runners and friends waiting for results of the Mary Cleary Memorial Run / Walk.

Reversing course, I went back to Main Street and headed south.
Caught a quick glimpse of shiney-bright cars on the lawn in front of Hardings' but orange cones and a Road Closed barrier kept me at a distance.

Big smiles from a cheery trio in front of a display of equipment from White's Farm Supply on my way to Sangerfield to try another approach.

West on Route 20 to Madison Street, which was lined solid with more vehicles.....

..........  and small groups of people headed for the lawn sale at #212.

Finally, at the Park. Hey! I know those people!!

This looks familiar, too!

The Madison Street side of the Park was jammed with vendors' displays.

I don't know whose booth this was, but it was bright ..........

.......... and I think that these were members of the Garden Club.

I don't know how many vendors there were, but there was still  room for more next to Sanger Avenue.

********

Sorry:  I don't know who won the Garden Club Basket raffle nor the names of winners of the Mary Cleary Run, or the Chili Cookoff.

Hopefully, all of this information will be found in this week's issue of The Waterville Times or heard in the Post Office parking lot!

IN THE MAIL

From Brian Staring, the Pumpkin King of Sanger Hill: "I went to the weigh off in Cooperstown this past Saturday and won first place for the first time ever with a 755.5 lb. Squash. It was a very hard year for growing a giant squash or a pumpkin. Many growers lost them to splits. As you know, we had too much rain and not enough sunshine."

Because he gets asked this question all the time, Brian added this photo of how these enormous squash or pumpkins are lifted and placed on a truck.

CONGRATULATIONS, BRIAN!

Also, this E-mail from Pat Louise, Editor of the Waterville Times:

"On Saturday many people came to the open house at the Waterville Times to see the new office. Around mid-morning we had an unusual visitor stroll in. A cat. He looked around and found a place to curl up and sleep. Even with the door open he did not make a move to leave. People who saw him said he had been hanging out at the laundry mat. We thought he belonged to someone who had advertised for her missing cat and sent her a photo. She said hers has a white stomach and this one does not. No one seemed to know if he had an owner looking for him. (Or her, we are not quite sure.) Rather than toss him back in the street, I took him home. As of this morning he has found some favorite places to sleep and has made peace with our dogs. His name is Ollie because his fur is the color of green and black olives. He will soon be visiting the Waterville Vet clinic to be checked out but aside from being hungry and lonely, is quite a loving cat."

(I have a feeling that the Louise-Gannon family has a new pet!)

Add this East Main Street home to the list of those undergoing Summer "make-overs!"

************************

Identity of "Jail Bird" revealed.

It's not surprising that this group of signs on the front lawn of the home at 139 West Bacon Street have caused a good deal of controversy.

"Jail?" "Really?" "What's 'M.D.A.' ?"

The "jail bird" is, actually, Steve Engle - a well-known community volunteer.
He doesn't look like a dangerous criminal at all and obviously he's out and about, loose in the village. I found him just after he'd run the Mary Cleary Memorial Run on Saturday morning and he explained his "crime" to me:

As criminals go, he's pretty lucky because he's been informed, well in advance,  that on October 3rd the Police will seek him out, arrest him, and take him to jail!

He won't be incarcerated for very long, but while he is in jail he'll be making lots and lots of telephone calls asking for pledges in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association!

His suggested goal is $2,400.00  You can aid in his early release by filling out the pledge sheet that's in the container on his front lawn.
(Just pledges: no cash, please.)

And to learn more, please go to
The Muscular Dystrophy Association website, HERE.
