Metals Collection Today

It's 33 degrees at 5:00 a.m. with just a sparse trace of new snow.

The YNN Weather Forecast:

"Windy with Lake Effect Snow - Quiet for the Mid Week Outlook

After a night of steady lake snow from some, lake effect continues today along with windy and colder conditions. There may be some heavier squalls making for difficult travel, especially east of Lake Ontario. Highs will be in the 30s.
Any lingering lake effect Wednesday morning will come to an end under partly cloudy skies and temperatures should manage to climb into the upper 30s. Dry weather persists through most of Thursday with highs near 40 degrees but we’ll be watching a clipper system which will allow for a few snow showers Thursday night into Friday.
A colder air mass is forecast to arrive by the weekend as temperatures only look to top out in the 20s."

Monday afternoon

No description necessary!

It was a busy day at the Carwash, and at times grungy vehicles were lined up three and four deep waiting for their turn to go through the bays and come out looking just like new, again.

It was warm enough for the front door of "Stinkers" tavern to be open and even the least informed of the "locals" has been able to add two and two and get four:  that's Mayor Jim Younes' truck and trailor parked at the curb and the popular establishment that he has owned and operated for the past few years, "The Village Diner" at the corner of E. Main Street and Route 315,  has a "For Sale" sign in the window.

Is this what I think it is?  What appears to be a very large box is being constructed next to the rear entrance to the Waterville Historical Society building.  I bet it's an enclosure for a "lift" that will finally make the building handicap accessible!

Just a backyard view of the old Methodist Church, built in 1860, from the Municipal Hall parking lot.

FOR THE RECORD

February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865

Today is Abraham Lincoln's Birthday

Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught Illinois lawyer and legislator with a reputation as an eloquent opponent of slavery, shocked many when he overcame several more prominent contenders to win the Republican Party's nomination for president in 1860. His election that November pushed several Southern states to secede by the time of his inauguration in March 1861, and the Civil War began barely a month later. Contrary to expectations, Lincoln proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a savvy leader during what became the costliest conflict ever fought on American soil. His Emancipation Proclamation, issued in 1863, freed all slaves in the rebellious states and paved the way for slavery's eventual abolition, while his Gettysburg Address later that year stands as one of the most famous and influential pieces of oratory in American history. In April 1865, with the Union on the brink of victory, Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed by the Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth; his untimely death made him a martyr to the cause of liberty and Union. Over the years Lincoln's mythic stature has only grown, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in the nation's history.  To read and see much more, please go to History.com

Mary Genevie Green Brainard (1847 - 1931) was born in Hubbardsville but, after her marriage to I. D. Brainard in 1870, spent the rest of her life in Waterville. She was involved in many community projects but is best-remembered for her gift to the Y.M.C.A. of the building that she later transferred to the Waterville Public Library and which is now home to the Waterville Historical Society. "Campaigns of the 146th Regiment" was published in 1915.
