It's Garbage Day.

34.3 degrees at 5:20 a.m.

The Weather Forecast from YNN:
"Rain and Wet Snow Showers Today
Remaining Unsettled Through the Rest of the Week

"Today we are dealing with an area of low pressure bringing scattered rain and wet snow showers. These stay in the forecast right through Thursday with temperatures topping out in the upper 30s. As this system pulls away, a colder air mass looks to filter in toward the tail end of the week and into the weekend with highs only in the 20s both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be some lake effect setting up which should gradually taper heading into the early part of next week."

From WKTV.

It was a good thing that the DPW spent Monday removing snowbanks from along Main Street because, had they not, yesterday morning's mixture of snow, sleet and rain would have made an even greater layer of concrete-like accumulation.

They began the process all over again, yesterday morning: the "Bobcat" scoops, loads the truck which then heads down Route 315 to "the old dump"  where the snow can melt at its own speed without inconveniencing anyone.

If you wonder why I bother showing pictures of scenes all too familiar to those of us who live here, it is because:

1. There are other villages - or states - where such a practice is not in municipal budgets, and the folks who live there are curious and also very envious.
2. Seeing this sort of photograph makes people sojourning in southern states very happy, for some reason or other!

Old-timers have always looked for golden twigs on willows as a sign of Spring.

8:00 update: WCS is now CLOSED

8:00 a.m.  Update:

WATERVILLE CSD IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE DAY.

7:25  There's very little accumulation, but a shiny icy coating on everything.

It's Recycling Day

31.6 degrees at 5:00 a.m.
It sounds windy and gusts blow sleet against the windows.

The YNN Weather Forecast:  "Mixed Precip Today,  Remaining Unsettled Through the Rest of the Week.

Rain and wet snow showers continues today so be prepared for slick roads and slow travel. Highs will be in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Breezy to windy conditions as well.

Unfortunately it won’t be a fast moving area of low pressure meaning scattered wet snow showers stay in the forecast right through Thursday with temperatures topping out in the upper 30s. As this system pulls away, a colder air mass looks to filter in toward the tail end of the week and into the weekend with highs only in the 20s both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be some lake effect setting up which should gradually taper heading into the early part of next week."

Well, they're not pussy willows or snow drops, but the next best: the first plant to show itself in the Spring - Skunks' Cabbages!

There's a wheelbarrow in the sidewalk showroom at Morgan's and I bet that rakes and garden spades will be added to the display any day now.

IN THE MAIL

 - From Gregory C. Stevens, San Diego, CA

"It is sad to see the old barn (at the corner of Putnam and Elmwood) being torn down! That was my playground for most of my childhood. I still remember when we moved into that house in 1978. I enjoyed playing basketball in the loft with my brother and pretending to be pitching for the New York Yankees as I threw my nerf ball against the side of the barn. Oh the memories!!"  (Thanks, Greg.)

1921 - 2013

*************************************

Yesterday
was another nearly-Springlike day.

The Village DPW spent much of the day working eastward along Main Street scooping up snowbanks and taking truckload after truckload of snow to the "old dump."

*******

The old "board and batten" barn next to the corner of Putnam and Elmwood is being taken down for salvage.  Built sometime after 1868, when Putnam Street was first developed, the lot is labelled "Suters" in the 1874 Atlas.  There was a William Suters,  a carpenter who did much of the fine interior work on Ruben Tower's office building - now the Masonic Temple - built in 1896. Perhaps this was his property (although there may have been more than one Suters, at that time) and maybe he even built the barn himself.

Woodwork of an entirely different sort has been in progress at the new beaver ponds next to VanHyning Road.

Spring fever and a search for pussy willows took me south to Hubbardsville and then back along Wickwire Road to Cole Hill Road where the view of Mason Road stretches northward.

I didn't see any pussy willows, but there was a lone Canada Goose floating on the Sangerfield River at the south end of Nine Mile Swamp. Possibly a good sign?

BACK TO SCHOOL
and back on regular schedule.

It's Garbage Day.

Just 32 degrees at 6:30 with a trace of new snow.

From WKTV:  "Monday starts out with mostly cloudy skies and a few flurries. An area of high pressure brings sunshine and mild weather by Monday afternoon with highs in the upper 30s. Sunshine to start Tuesday with an increase in clouds out ahead of a large storm system. This storm system will be watched closely as precipitation could be a mix of rain and snow by Wednesday.
Unsettled weather remains in the forecast late into the week, with several opportunities for light snow."

It'a 33 degrees at 6:00 a.m.

YNN's Forecast: "A few scattered light rain, sleet and snow showers are expected Saturday with highs from the mid 30s to just above 40. Slightly colder air will settle for Sunday with plenty of clouds and a few spotty flurries. Monday still looks nice with some sun and temperatures climbing within a few degrees of 40. Low pressure will then bring the chance for what looks to be mostly rain to our region Tuesday with highs around 40, and perhaps even into the 40s. Temperatures will gradually begin to cool some heading towards the end of next week. A few spotty light rain and snow showers are expected for Wednesday and Thursday with scattered snow showers expected for Friday."
