Noon time word to the wise ....

It may not be snowing in Waterville or even up on Paris Hill, but a blog reader just sent me this picture, taken before noon, on Route 12.  Watch out for that blowing snow!!
An additional note states that the two in the vehicle were o.k.

It's Garbage Day

and 11.3 Brrrrisk degrees under bright blue sky at 7:15 a.m.

The YNN Weather Forecast:
"Blustery and Frigid; Flurries, Snow Showers and Some Steadier Lake Snow.

Strong, gusty winds and frigid air temperatures settling in the upper single digits and low teens (Monday night) will create single digit and subzero wind chills ....... into Tuesday morning. In addition, a broader area of light snow will create pockets of slick travel with reduced visibility across portions of CNY including the Mohawk Valley. Steadier and heavier lake snow is expected across the Tug Hill tonight which will also produce several more inches over the Tug and a portions of Oswego County. Extremely treacherous driving conditions are likely in the these area.
Patchy light snow snow is expected on and off Tuesday across most of CNY with steadier lake snow gradually drifting south across Oswego County and into the Mohawk Valley with several inches of accumulation likely. Plan for lots of extra travel time in steadier snow. Gusty winds are also expected with highs in  the teens.
Flurries and steadier lake snow will continue on Wednesday with slick and slow travel, and highs in the teens. High pressure will quiet things down a bit for Thursday."

Whereas Waterville has received little more than three inches of snow throughout the long weekend, on Sunday night alone, Paris received 5" and Clinton 7"!

Posted on WKTV at 9:00 a.m.

Yesterday afternoon at around three o'clock, Main Street looked nearly deserted.

There was snow in the air, and fresh sand on the country roads, but cold ....  and I was reminded of the first few lines of a poem written by Christina Rossetti in 1782:

"In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago."

True: there wasn't any "snow on snow," but the view of Tassell Hill from Hanover certainly was  -  "bleak!"

The old Mosher Hop House at the corner of Barker and Austin Roads looked different: either the weight of snow or that of the vines themselves has caused them to fall right off the building.

IN THE MAIL

Good News!

First, a plea for help finding "Dakota," who had run away from his home on Canning Factory Road ......

............. then a note saying "He's been found - in Cassville!"

From Yvonne Durant Brady, President of the Marshall Historical Society, writing in the Society's January Newsletter:

"I remember being in elementary school and having a few extra days off of school because of a major storm. It was exciting to walk on the ledge of the snow banks created by the wing of the snow plow.

"I did a little research and found an article on
www. Fultonhistory.com from the Waterville Times dated Thursday, January 1, 1970.

"The article praised the local highway departments and how they handled the storm. John Cornelius, Marshall Superintendent,  praised his crew in the article.

The article indicated that 3 drifts, 10 foot in height or more kept Route 12 closed from 10:30 Friday morning until 3:00 pm Tuesday."

(I remember that storm, too - do you?)
