It's Garbage Day
34.5 degrees at 5:00 a.m.

From YNN:  "Quiet & Pleasant Thursday, Rain Showers Friday

Tonight will be variably cloudy, breezy and chilly with lows in the 20s to near 30 degrees.

High pressure will dominate on Thursday allowing dry weather and sunshine to prevail. Temperatures will remain above average on Thursday with highs in the 30s to near 40 degrees.

Our attention shifts to a storm system working in for the tail end of the week that will provide us with rain showers on Friday.  Highs on Friday will be in the middle 40s. Unseasonably mild weather will stick around right through the weekend with highs in the 50s. After starting out next week with highs in the 40s on Monday, temperatures will drop back into the 30s by midweek."

The JANUARY THAW is here!

For me, it's a mixed blessing:  icicles are disappearing, but - by yesterday afternoon - mud was appearing.  Fortunately we don't have to deal with this much of it!

East Main Street, probably around 1890.

This is the only really old photograph that I am aware of that shows any snow at all in Waterville. The reason for that is probably NOT that it never snowed but that, back in those days, photographers developed their slides right on the spot in little horse-drawn wagons and the chemicals required for the process just didn't work in cold weather.

Nowadays we don't have to depend on chemicals, and we also have "Photoshop!"

Instead of roaming around looking for things to take pictures of, yesterday, I spent quite a good deal of time introducing a friend to the wonders (as well as a few of the frustrations) of Photoshop. That was fun, but .......

To make up for the lack of new photographs, I've dug out some nice snowy images from past January postings.

East Main Street - paved and plowed.

The caves in Forge Hollow.

The waterfall on Gridley-Paige Road.

The "Scerbo building" on West Main Street.

Morgan's Hardware

Near the Fish & Game Club.

On Skyline Drive, January 2010.

In Sangerfield.

Every time an image appears in this blog it is also automatically saved, online, in a sort of "photo album" by Picasa.  These blog albums now contain 15,544 images! Probably a quarter of those are "screen snaps" of things like 7-day weather forecasts, and there are also many that have been sent to me by local photographers.  If you're so inclined, you can look through all of them, some rainy - or snowy - day, by clicking HERE.

Have a great weekend!
