It's Garbage Day.
40 degrees and dry at 5:30 a.m.
I don't have a real rain gauge, but the wheelbarrow that I didn't turn upside down last Wednesday is now full to the brim!

The YNN Weather Forecast:
"More Clouds and Showers Today, Storms and Warm Weather Ahead
The real warm and humid air arrives by Thursday and sticks around through Saturday with highs approaching 90 degrees!"
Showers and storms will move in during the day some of which could have some heavy downpours with them. They will also keep high temperatures down with highs around 70 degrees expected.
A warm front will only slowly move through CNY, keeping the shower and storm chances high through Wednesday while afternoon highs continue the upward trend.

CONGRATULATIONS
To Yvonne and ALL our Graduates!

After a very shivery, 33-degree start, Memorial Day turned out to be beautiful. Although the frost that had blanketed lawns in the early morning was soon melted by bright sunshine, temperatures only rose to the low sixties, so none of the marchers were ever in any danger of suffering heat stroke.
In all of the cemeteries new flags had been placed on the Veterans' graves and here and there new plantings of geraniums or pansies bloomed.
Fortunately, neither the bright petunias in hanging baskets along Main Street and next to the Park nor those planted in the 1906 Watering Trough had been touched by the frost......
..... and, for the one hundred and eighth year, the Civil War Soldier in the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument Park waited for the parade.
******
Over the past few years I've learned that it's difficult (for me, at least,) to find a place to park - or perch - close enough to Monument Park to enjoy the Memorial Day Exercises in Waterville. I decided to go to Deansboro, instead.
I think there were even more people there, but more room, too!
On my way to Deansboro I passed a lone runner.
I knew right away who it was, so I made a quick turn-around and waited.
It was Bob VanDenbergh, and by now you'll know, right away, what he was doing and why! You can read about his fundraising efforts for the Wounded Warrior Project here,
and can also Email him with your pledge: bobvan67@gmail.com

IN THE MAIL
From Vicki Sabol for the Food Pantry, a follow-up on this sign in the park:
"In April we helped 50 families, a total of 151 individuals and 2265 meals. That was the high month for the year.
"We were the beneficiary of the wonderful Postal Workers' Food Drive last weekend. About 3000 pounds of food was donated and that means the postal carriers had to store and carry that amount of food to the post offices in Waterville, Oriskany Falls, and Deansboro. A big thank you to everyone who helped with this effort.
"We are also doing a new fundraiser in the form of a
GOLF TOURNAMENT
on Sunday, August 4th,
at Barker Brook Golf Course in Oriskany Falls.
Thank you, Vicki!

The June Book-of-the-Month is
"In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, and a neighboring tribe of cannibals, State of Wonder
is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside
unimaginable loss. It is a tale that leads the reader into the very
heart of darkness, and then shows us what lies on the other side."
Reserve a copy at the Waterville Library at 841-4651, and come to the Meeting Room at noon on Wednesday, June 26th.
Bring your lunch. Dessert, coffee and tea will be served.

Norm Cowen stopped at my house on Saturday to tell me that he and several others had seen a Sandhill Crane standing in a corn field next to Midge Wratten's home on Mason Road in Sangerfield. I dashed right down there, of course - and Jody Hildreth did the same, when I told him about it - but we were both out of luck.
If you see a very large Heron-like bird that looks like this, please let us know!

I want to thank all of you who have written to express "dismay" or "despair" at the thought of not having frequent blog posts to read during the Summer, but I want to reassure you of this:
Because I created "At Home in the Huddle" (at the urging of Nora Keating) in order to record events that in
some way change or affect Waterville's future and the history of the community, I think that we can all be fairly sure that if I hear about it - vacation or not! - I will not let such an occurrence go by without some mention in an unexpected blog post!!! PsB
Have a great day, everyone!
