IN THE MAIL

- from Lisa Flaherty:   Happy Earth Day!!
The Oriskany Falls Rotary Club participates in a Highway Cleanup Project every year just in time for Earth Day. We always cleanup the stretch of road in Oriskany Falls starting at the Firehouse and work our way to Route 20. The fire department is there slowing down traffic and there are adult volunteers to help drive and pick up garbage and sometimes volunteers! This year it will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 6pm - we will have a pizza party at the firehouse after to show appreciation to our volunteers-WE DESPERATELY NEED VOLUNTEERS...CAN YOU HELP? :-)

-from Vicki Sabol:  "I want to give you the Food Pantry statistics on March.   While we were down a little in February, we were back up to:

  •  44 households in March, which reflects
    • 26 children,
    • 65 adults,
    • 21 seniors

      • for a total of 112 individuals and 1680 meals.

We give out a package of 3 meals a day for 5 days.

"While we are pretty well stocked now, we never can become complacent, so we are looking forward to the Post Office Food Drive on Saturday, May 11, when the postal carriers will pick up any foodstuffs left by your mailbox. As a reminder, we are open on Mondays from 3 to 4:30 except for second Monday of the month or Federal holidays."

YESTERDAY

Roadside showrooms on West Main Street......

............ and Fuess-Cleary Road.

Twice, in recent days, I've come across folks happily gathering wild leeks - some calling them "ramps," as their grandmothers did. They had their grandma's recipes for creamy,
slightly onion-y, slightly garlic-y soup, too.

If you're not that fortunate but want to give it a good old-fashioned try, here is  the link for that great video in which two young experts show you exactly how to harvest wild leeks and then prepare potato-leek soup!

What a difference a few sunny days make, and now winter rye is turning bright green.

Tractors of all sizes rule the fields ......

......... but you can see how dry the ground is by the clouds of dust that follow wherever they go.
