Wednesday a.m. Update

*********

It's Recyclable Collection Day.
44 degrees and sunny at 6:30 a.m.

The Weather Forecast from YNN: "High pressure will dominate Wednesday through Saturday with more sun over this period and lots of dry weather. The risk for an isolated shower or thunderstorm will return Friday and Saturday afternoons.

A front will then be in play on Sunday with a few scattered showers likely. It doesn't look exceptionally wet at this point, but we'll see how this develops over the next few days. "

From Lee Pavlot, these photographs taken at
the Optimist Polka Party held on Sunday, April 21 at the VFW in Clinton. "Over 100 people had a fun-filled afternoon.  Music was supplied by Tony’s Polka Band."

Mr. & Mrs. Kurt Schachtler celebrated their 57th anniversary at the party. (Congratulations!)

(Thanks, Lee!)

Attention "Old Timers!"

From Jill Getman, at the Library, to me - but I need your feedback on this, please!

Jill has pencilled in the following dates for continued "Story Swaps":

June 14 & 28,
July 12 & 26
August 9 & 23
September 6 & 20 (?)

"We could do afternoons at 1pm if that was a good time."

(She also offered to do the cookies and lemonade!)

This would be either the fifth or sixth year, I think - do you want to continue? You can Email me at the link in the right-hand column of this page or phone me at 841-4679.

Monday a.m. Update

******************
It's 50 degrees at 7:00 a.m.
Overnight rain has stopped, but it's still cloudy.

*********

The WKTV morning Weather Forecast: "A weak low pressure system brings light rain showers today.  It won't be a washout, but highs will only make it into the lower 60s - much cooler than the mid 70s we saw yesterday.  Clouds and sprinkles tonight and tomorrow.
A major pattern shift takes place starting Wednesday.  A large blocking pattern in the jet stream will allow for dry, mild, sunny weather to last for the rest of the week into the weekend.  High temperatures will be near 70 with overnight lows above freezing."

**************************

Making up for Lost Time!

The Wild Flower Season began nearly two weeks later than it normally does, but now we're getting caught up.  I found these "Adder's Tongue"    /    "Dog-toothed Violet"  /  "Trout Lily" blossoms on Saturday - the 27th, 2013,  the same date as two years ago.

Blood Root is blooming, as well ......

.........  and "Star Magnolias" are at their best here and there in Clinton and the Root Glen.

*************

It's a perfect time for "Greens!"

Both Dandelion and Cowslip greens are just right for harvesting.
If you wait until yellow blossoms open, you'll have waited too long!

Dandelion greens are "challenging," because the leaves are naturally bitter.  Simple-sounding recipes may not be the answer - here's an amusing article that offers a few solutions.

********

Cowslip leaves like this are perfect for "Creamed Cowslip Greens."

Next week: "Fiddleheads!"

FOR THE RECORD

I've put together an unusually large blog post because, although the weather is not as nice as it was yesterday, I'm going to be heading North to hunt for Trailing Arbutus and then aiming South to check on the Painted Trillium -  I may not have opportunity to collect anything newsy for Tuesday morning!

If you didn't happen to see the Notice from the Waterville Village Clerk Brenda Knoeller, that I posted on Friday, here it is, again:

"All combined utility bills are due to be received by the Village Clerk no later than May 4, 2013.  All village residents with unpaid bills take notice your balance due will be relieved onto your village taxes.   All customers outside the village with unpaid bills will have your water shut off resulting in an additional $100 fee to have the water turned back on.

"Please note there is a drop box outside the Village offices that you may leave your payments in should you need to drop payments off when the office is closed.

I think that Mr. Guy Scerbo, on Sanger Hill Road, may have been the first in the community to mow his lawn!

Note to "Snowbirds"  -  all the snow has melted; it's safe to come home!

It's Garbage Day again.
38 degrees and overcast at 5:00 a.m.

From YNN:  Cooler and Breezy Today, Nice Finish to the Week

"Today will be noticeably cooler, but quiet with a blend of sun and clouds.  Highs only will be in the 50s.  The  threat for a couple of spotty showers returns late tonight into tomorrow morning courtesy of a weak upper-level disturbance.

High pressure regains control on Friday, although temperatures remain cooler than average with highs in the 50s.

Luckily, the weekend is shaping up to be quite nice with warmer temperatures and mainly dry weather.  Highs will be in the 60s for both Saturday and Sunday."

There are Daffodils everywhere!

How many of you remember memorizing...
"I wandered lonely as a cloud........"
(Click HERE for more of Wadsworth's famous poem.)

And, along with daffodils, come the first Dandelions - always against the southern wall of Municipal Hall ........

and the ever-persistent "Goutweed," or Bishop's Weed which, although apparently edible ... I just want out of my flowerbeds!
(Recipes HERE.)

(I did battle with one patch of it for so long, yesterday, and with such determination, that I've sort-of crippled my "mouse finger" and am not typing or "clicking" very rapidly this morning!)

Full Moon Tonight

Sometimes called the "Full Pink Moon" NOT because it will appear pink, itself, but because it's the time when - somewhere - Ground Phlox blooms.
