Sunday evening Updated Mon. 5:00 a.m.

It's Garbage Day

The temperature at 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning
is 41.7 degrees!

WKTV's Weather Forecast: "One more very mild day today before seasonably chilly weather returns.  A southerly wind will keep temperatures in the low to mid 50s. A low pressure system from the Great Lakes pushes east tonight into Tuesday, bringing clouds and rain by Tuesday morning.
Once the cold front moves through Tuesday night, winter returns on Wednesday with highs in the upper 30s and the chance of snow Wednesday through Friday.
Temperatures will stay seasonably chilly, in the upper 30s, heading into the weekend."

What a wonderfully warm and Spring-like weekend it was!

At one point, on Sunday afternoon, the thermometer in my car registered 56 degrees!

I think that nearly all the canines in the community had leashed up their people to take them for walks around the Village.

And they weren't alone: nearly everything on wheels was out, too.  From baby strollers, to scooters, tricycles,  bicycles and two motorcycles - they all rolled. (No rollerblades, yet!)

Seasonal "speed bumps" are occurring - puddles and potholes.

Over the weekend I saw several fishermen wearing waders standing in the Oriskany Creek at the dugway.  It made me wonder ....  I searched for the New York State Fishing regulations but didn't really find an answer.  I am quite sure that Trout Season doesn't open until April 1st.

First I heard them and then I saw them:  about three dozen Canada Geese in the pond at the foot of Grant Hill.

 - and then I found
Pussy Willows 'way out on Bailey Lake Road.  I couldn't reach them, but at least I know that they're there!

I know that it's really too early, but I couldn't resist stopping to peer at the ground hoping to see some new Hepatica leaves.  Not yet, but soon!

Old-fashioned SapBuckets have been hung on the maples at Tom and Sharon Stiles' home in Stockwell .......

........... and at the Avery Farm up the hill on the road to Bailey Lake.

IN THE MAIL

- from Tammy Alcott, news of a new "Boilermaker" training program offered by Garage Gym, in Oriskany Falls.  To learn about it, please click HERE.

- from Lawrence Gilley, a link to the Marshall Historical Society's March Newsletter.

- from Rotarian Deb Conway, news that the old-fashioned Rotary Auction will be back in June!  "We are seeking donations of good quality household items for the auction to be held in June:  Furniture, sporting goods, kitchen items, small appliances, etc., but No clothes, computers, large appliances, upholstered furniture or TVs please.  If you have items you would like to donate, please contact Scott at 841-4175.  "

I think that the first Annual Rotary Auction was held in 1948. That would make this year's the 65th. Quite a tradition!!

- from Don Yacco, a member of the Mohawk Valley Astronomical Society, an E-note giving me permission to publish his photograph of the Rosette Nebula, taken at the Observatory on Friday night. (Click to enlarge!)

He added:  "Here is some technical info if it would be helpful in the publication.
  • Equipment used:
  • Meade Series 5000 80mm APO refractor
  • Televue .8x focal reducer/field flattener
  • Canon 60Da DSLR camera
  • Hutech IDAS LPS2 filter (light pollution blocker)
  •
  • Imaging Data:
  • ISO 800
  • RAW format
  • 12(300 second) exposures
  • All images were stacked and combined to create a final "clean" image
  • Post processing was used to enhance the photo."
(Thank you, Don.  I am brain-boggled!)

(I looked in Wikipedia:  "The cluster and nebula lie at a distance of some 5,200 light years away..." To read more, please click
HERE.    How far is a "light year"?  Click HERE.)

- from Elaine Peterson, who wrote that on the afternoon when I saw seven deer on her front lawn, if I had waited a while longer I'd have seen as many as thirty!   (Thanks, Elaine!)
