It's Garbage Day
22.6 degrees and dry at 4:00 a.m.

(Obviously, changing clock time does nothing for me!)

The Weather Forecast from YNN:

"Bright Skies and Chilly, Warming Up Mid-week

Today will be a bright, but chilly day with highs barely making it above 40.
Look for temperatures to warm up a bit heading into the middle of the week. High pressure will move east of us, turning winds more southerly. Highs will be near 60 Wednesday, and above 60 Thursday.
Our next shot for rain comes in on Thursday via a cool front which will bring in a decent shot of cool air for Friday."

IN THE MAIL

From a concerned Blog Reader to a Morning Runner:

"My co-workers and I travel Sanger Hill Road every morning between 6:30am and 7am. For the past two months we have seen a runner who runs up and down Sanger Hill from Waterville to the top of the hill and then turns and runs back to town.

"He wears all BLACK and no reflectors, there have been many times that I do not see him until I am right next to him. I was hoping you could post an anonymous message to whoever this runner is that he needs to have lights on him or wear neon or white clothes, I am afraid he is going to get hit by a car!"

I hope this reaches the right person!  Thank you.

Saturday Ride-around

I don't know how it's done, but even on Saturday afternoon tiny lights glimmered in many of the Jack-o-Lanterns at 188 Sanger Avenue.  Did anyone manage to take a picture of them at night?  I'd love it if you'd share it with the blog!

New this year -  another wonderful display at the corner of West Bacon Street and Babbott Avenue!

******

Nature's displays continue to dazzle.  I don't believe that I have ever seen such a veritable forest of Black Alder Winterberry as that next to River Road just about half-a-mile east of the Solsville Hotel!

But in case you're tempted to gather a bouquet, that's probably not a good idea.

1.  The plant is "protected" in New York State.
2. Black Alder always seems to grow in cold knee-deep squishy mud!
3. Even if you happened to have a few twigs, you would have to leave them outdoors, otherwise the berries will fall off right away.

Equally bright - the leaves on this Winged Euonymus at Parkwood Farm on Sanger Hill Road.

The misty-murky weather made the gold of these Poplar Trees near Camp Road stand out even more.

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Recently, a large "X" appeared on an old oak tree on Babbott Avenue, indicating that it will soon be removed.

Even from my car (it was pouring out!) I could see that there really is a problem with the adjacent sidewalk. Certainly bad news for pedestrians and the sidewalk snowplow.

But ever since the subject came up at a Village Board meeting and was then reported in The Waterville Times, the number of Villagers who object to the removal of the tree has grown.

The alternative is, of course, to relocate a strip of sidewalk so as to circumvent the base of the tree.

I just wonder what YOU think?

E-mail me HERE.

I posted this question on Sunday afternoon and soon received two telephone calls from blog readers who must have felt more comfortable using the phone instead of putting their thoughts in Emails.

They both had the same general opinion as another person who later replied online and who quoted the late Jay Manchester as saying:

"Why cut something down that has taken a hundred years or more to grow to show off her beauty!"

And the writer continued - "Why not find a way to work around her instead of cutting her down? ....   Why can't the Village crew remove a small section of sidewalk and make a small curve around the tree and pour some concrete to make a new sidewalk around it?  It's always a shame if you ask me to cut down trees for simple reasons with no value. For a small amount of money compared to removing the whole tree. The Village crew gets paid to work doing jobs every day and all they would have to do is come up with money for the concrete."

FOR THE RECORD

Enjoy!
