For your Amusement and/or Edification!

The Blogger's List of

MORNING NEWS WEBSITES.

This can be tricky because of required subscriptions and associated "sign-in" process, but the easy way to find local news is to look for the little white search area at the upper right of the front page, type "Waterville" (or Deansboro or Oriskany Falls or whatever) and click on the little magnifying glass.

Also: click on "Announcements" to read Death Notices and Obituaries.

(You might also like to spend some time perusing the Marshall Historical Society's website, maintained by Lawrence Gilley and filled chock-full of historical articles.)

****************************

Of course much of what you see on the blog are photos, posters and news bits that have arrived in my morning Email.

As I've said in the past few days, the prime function of "At Home in the Huddle"  is to keep a record of events that make the Waterville community what it is and what it will be.

Although I may have hung out the figurative "Gone Fishin' " sign, I really will be checking blog email very often and hope that if you have seen an extraordinary event or know of something that is going to happen, and that should be part of that record, that you'll let me know!

It's Recyclables Collection Day
57 degrees at 6:00 a.m. and the rain has stopped.

The morning Weather Forecast from YNN:

"Warm & Humid, Showers Return for the Weekend

Temperatures are forecast to climb into the 80s and close to 90 today with humid conditions and by Friday temperatures will be topping out near 90 degrees! Each of these days will feature a few hit or miss showers/storms, but there should be quite a bit of dry weather mixing in as well.

Saturday will be another hot day with highs near 90 degrees.  Once again, a shower or thunderstorm will be possible during the afternoon.

Sunday will feature a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms as a cold front works in.  Temperatures will drop back into the 70s heading into next week."

****************

Yesterday afternoon's rain/thunder storm, during which the rain blew horizontally at times, did considerable damage in communities fifteen or twenty miles north of Waterville.

from WKTV.

from the Utica Observer-Dispatch.

I haven't heard of any such damage in this area, but I can hear "Big Creek" running full and I'll be going out for an early "ride-around" to see if there's more to tell you about.

****************************************

ONE NEW ANNOUNCEMENT
in addition to those I've posted earlier this week:

I spotted this sign just down the Route 315 hill from the center of Deansboro for the first time yesterday afternoon. After last evening's rain it may not even be there, today!

The new Marshall Town Barn
replaces the old barn that burned in January, 2011.

*********

Later today I'll be sitting down at the computer to put together an interactive list of sites for you to follow so that you can still put together your own Morning News while I'm on Summer break!

Check back this afternoon.

In the meantime, have a great day!

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

It's 59 degrees, drippy and a little foggy at 6:30 a.m.

The Weather Forecast from YNN, Updated 05/29/2013 03:23 AM

"Scattered Showers and Storms, Hot & Humid Toward the End of the Week

Showers and storms remain a threat for today however, it will be warm and more humid with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.

As the front continues to track northward, a very warm and humid air mass will build in for the second half of the week. Temperatures on Thursday are forecast to climb into the upper 80s and by Friday we’ll be topping out near 90 degrees! Each of these days will feature a few hit or miss showers/storms but there should be quite a bit of dry weather mixing in as well.

At this point it seems as though highs this weekend will stay in the 80s before a cold front pushes in Sunday afternoon."

Tuesday morning update

It's Garbage Day.
40 degrees and dry at 5:30 a.m.

I don't have a real rain gauge, but the wheelbarrow that I didn't turn upside down last Wednesday is now full to the brim!

The YNN  Weather Forecast:

"More Clouds and Showers Today, Storms and Warm Weather Ahead

Showers and storms will move in during the day  some of which could have some heavy downpours with them. They will also keep high temperatures down with highs around 70 degrees expected.

A warm front will only slowly move through CNY, keeping the shower and storm chances high through Wednesday while afternoon highs continue the upward trend.

The real warm and humid air arrives by Thursday and sticks around through Saturday with highs approaching 90 degrees!"

CONGRATULATIONS
To Yvonne and ALL our Graduates!

******

After a very shivery, 33-degree start, Memorial Day turned out to be beautiful. Although the frost that had blanketed lawns in the early morning was soon melted by bright sunshine, temperatures only rose to the low sixties, so none of the marchers were ever in any danger of suffering heat stroke.

In all of the cemeteries new flags had been placed on the Veterans' graves and here and there new plantings of geraniums or pansies bloomed.

Fortunately, neither the bright petunias in hanging baskets along Main Street and next to the Park nor those planted in the 1906 Watering Trough had been touched by the frost......

.....  and,  for the one hundred and eighth year, the Civil War Soldier in the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument Park waited for the parade.

******

Over the past few years I've learned that it's difficult (for me, at least,) to find a place to park - or perch - close enough to Monument Park to enjoy the Memorial Day Exercises in Waterville.  I decided to go to Deansboro, instead.

I think there were even more people there, but more room, too!

On my way to Deansboro I passed a lone runner.
I knew right away who it was, so I made a quick turn-around and waited.

It was Bob VanDenbergh, and by now you'll know, right away, what he was doing and why! You can read about his fundraising efforts for the Wounded Warrior Project here
and can also Email him with your pledge: bobvan67@gmail.com

IN THE MAIL

From Vicki Sabol for the Food Pantry, a follow-up on this sign in the park:

"In April we helped 50 families, a total of 151 individuals and 2265 meals.  That was the high month for the year.

"We were the beneficiary of the wonderful Postal Workers' Food Drive last weekend.  About 3000 pounds of food was donated and that means the postal carriers had to store and carry that amount of food to the post offices in Waterville, Oriskany Falls, and Deansboro.  A big thank you to everyone who helped with this effort.

"We are also doing a new fundraiser in the form of a
GOLF TOURNAMENT
on Sunday, August 4th,
at Barker Brook Golf Course in Oriskany Falls.

We have been soliciting sponsors and prizes.  All proceeds of course stay local and help families in the communities in the Waterville Central School District.  We do need golfers; it promises to be a fun day.  Am attaching a flyer about the event and this has phone numbers to call for registration or any donations."

Thank you, Vicki!

(And here's the flyer.)

From Ed Townsend:

Three Steeples in Paris
will be holding a multi-family Rummage/Garage Sale
in our barn.

Thursday, June 13, 5 to 8 PM.
Friday, June 14, 10 AM to 6 PM.

From Doris Stephan, for the

Waterville Public Library Book Discussion Group:

The June Book-of-the-Month is

"In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, and a neighboring tribe of cannibals, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss. It is a tale that leads the reader into the very heart of darkness, and then shows us what lies on the other side."

Reserve a copy at the Waterville Library at 841-4651, and come to the Meeting Room at noon on Wednesday, June 26th.
Bring your lunch.  Dessert, coffee and tea will be served.

Norm Cowen stopped at my house on Saturday to tell me that he and several others had seen a Sandhill Crane standing in a corn field next to Midge Wratten's home on Mason Road in Sangerfield.  I dashed right down there, of course - and Jody Hildreth did the same, when I told him about it - but we were both out of luck.

If you see a very large Heron-like bird that looks like this, please let us know!

I want to thank all of you who have written to express "dismay" or "despair" at the thought of not having frequent blog posts to read during the Summer, but I want to reassure you of this:

Because I created "At Home in the Huddle" (at the urging of Nora Keating) in order to record events that in some way change or affect Waterville's future and the history of the community, I think that we can all be fairly sure that if I hear about it - vacation or not! -   I will not let such an occurrence go by without some mention in an unexpected blog post!!!  PsB

Have a great day, everyone!

Garbage Day.
64 degrees and hazy at 6:30 a.m.

The YNN Weather Forecast:

"Scattered Showers and Storms / Still Humid; Cooler Late Week and Weekend

Things look to stay unsettled today courtesy of an approaching cold front. This front will also allow temperatures to back off a bit with highs in the mid to upper 70s.

The core of the coolest air arrives Friday as temperatures struggle to make their way out of the 50s with the theat for scattered showers.

Luckily, with high pressure building overhead, lingering showers will come to an end setting us up for a nice stretch of weather through the holiday weekend. Highs will be in the 60s for both Saturday and Sunday.  Lots of sunshine is expected for Memorial Day on Monday with temperatures climbing into the upper 60s.

Yesterday

The Tuesday night rainfall was undoubtedly welcomed by gardeners and farmers, but - in some cases - there may have been too much of it.  Two mallards were quick to find a newly-formed pond to swim in in a cornfield next to Fuess-Cleary Road.

Black clouds brought more rain yesterday afternoon, but a break in the clouds let enough sunshine through to create a huge rainbow that hung directly over Hanover for quite a while.

For the first time in over forty years,  the weight of the oversized, moisture-laden blossoms on some of my hundred-year-old lilacs have bent the branches to the ground.....

........  and dandelion puffs have been drenched.

The giant "Cucumber Magnolia" in front of the Mack residence on Hanover Road is in full bloom .....

while little yellow wildflowers .......

.......... and "Cow Parsley" lines country roadsides.

Glimpsed between cars:  all of the window boxes and planters at the New York Pizzeria are filled with giant pansies!

A Decision:

I will be taking the Summer off!
  -  at least I'm going to try to.

After seven years it may not be as easy to change my routine as I think it will be, but I'm really looking forward to taking my early-morning cup of coffee out onto the back porch to sit and listen to the birds, to try to catch up on unfinished writing, drawing and painting, weeding, and even cleaning as well as heading out of town on various treks and travels whenever I feel like it!

I will post June calendars early next week. If YOU have any special Summertime events that you want me to mention, please send the information to me over the weekend.

I'll also post a list of all the "links" that you can use to keep up-to-date on daily events.

In the meantime,

Have a grand weekend, everyone!
